The Day Indie met Dance
October 9th 2008 12:32
Hybrid genres are a lot like Britney Spears' love interests. Sometimes genres mingle together as a one off, a collaboration between artists who think their combined talents were a good idea at the time. It's all a crazy night in Vegas, a whim of fancy mixed with a lot of alcohol and the meshing of hot lyrics and beats. But then in the morning suddenly the charts don't like you. You were great alone, but then you married K-Fed. Ahem. I mean collaborated with a genre so crazy different to the one you mastered it all sounded a bit forced. Some people (for some sick sick reason) liked you, were very much fascinated, but everyone knew it wouldn't stick. I'm happy to say that this is not the case with indie dance. Think Britney and Justin. A classic combination but more sexy snake wielding but not yet trashbag Britney and hot, just out of N*Sync Justified Justin, post Alyssa Milano. Wow. What could have been…Anyway, for all the indie rockers who got a little bored of attempting to mosh on the dance floor, indie dance made it cool to bust a more horizontal move. Here's my list of indie dance bands that you need to get acquainted with, in the same way we all wanted to get a little action with Brit-Justin, back in the K-Fed-was-just-Justin's-backu p-dancer hay-day.
1. MGMT
Electric Feel anybody? Okay, so they're technically, well according to my itunes, 'Neo-Psychadelic' but whatevs, for the purpose of my list, my definition of dance music is a song that has an insanely dance inducing beat that gets everybody hectic on the dance floor (so what if the beat is a killer flute riff...it's indie dance people, let's not discriminate). Try not dancing to that stellar groove. Barry Gibbs can bite MGMT moon dust.

2. Crystal Castles.
If you don't feel inclined to pull atleast a shuffle when Crimewave gets a spin on the tables, I will seriously eat my shoe (have anyone seen that youtube video? It is surprisingly painful to watch). They're so hardcore awesome they have a picture of a 'female' (it’s madonna) with a black eye on one of their band t-shirts.

3. Klaxons
Does this band need an introduction? I'm would say nay, but go on to introduce them anyway. They are most well known as the pioneers of 'nu-rave', and I state this in direct reference to the genius that is Atlantis to Interzone. They do incredible things with synthesizers, keyboards and electric guitars. What more could you ask for? Their debut album, Myths of the Near Future won the flipping Mercury Prize for chrissakes. Come on. Get on the bandwagon.

4. CSS
They're lead singer is called lovefoxxx. It's sexy pop meets fun, jumpy reggae beats. They have a song called 'Yager Yoga' – it’s the closest chance any Star Wars reference will get to being accepted as witty by a scenester. 'I Fly' on their new album Donkey is literally about being a fly and the trouble with getting in someone's eye/mouth.
Really Long Link
5. [is]
Yes they won triple J's unearthed competition. Yes I only know the song that won them triple J unearthed. But damn it, Cult Romance is the best damn dance track I've heard in a while. Watch this space get very hot in the near future.

6. Hot Chip
Possibly the nerdiest looking dance band around. Ready For the Floor has been surrounded by epic amounts of hype, unseen since the invention of sliced bread. With good reason.

7. The Teenagers
This band encapsulates everything that is great about being a teenager, that is, pretty much everything that you have ever done at a party that you would never ever bring up with your grandma/potential employer. And that accent! At times they even sound a little bloc party-ish with a good measure of rocking guitar riffs.

Note: Fact. Mentioning any of these bands in a conversation with someone wearing skinny jeans and/or ray bans will increase your attractiveness by approximately 8.55%.
