Indie-itus: A diagnosis
June 28th 2008 00:40
Do you have indie-itus? Answer YES or NO to the following questions for a comprehensive diagnosis:
a) Do you find yourself treating your mp3 player/itunes like a child?
b) When someone speaks of bands you've never heard of do you find yourself spinning into a spiral of self doubt, questioning your identity or fighting an urge to take off your clothes and jump said person?
c) If you mention a band that no one knows and then find out that they're actually quite well known do you respond/think with/of the words 'unworthy' or 'I feel so dirty'?
d) When looking up a new band's website and you find that their myspace reveals that they are with a 'major' label, do you die a little inside?
e) Do you scoff at the saying 'sharing is caring'?
If you answered yes to all or most of the above questions you have fallen victim to the ravaging epidemic that is indie-itus.
Here are some tips for keeping symptoms at bay:
1. DO NOT LISTEN TO MAINSTREAM RADIO. This will only make you more disillusioned, and anything that is not mainstream will lull you into a false sense of security, and phrases like 'no one understands me except (insert obscure band name here)'.
3. YOU DO NOT OWN BANDS. Just because you saw them when they were being paid in beer and beans, playing gigs in divey pubs and charging 50c entry fees, you do not OWN the band. You were not the only one to have seen them play and it's likely that some other indie-itus sufferer is claiming ownership over them too. And if you ever meet this other indie-itus sufferer remember violence is not the answer. The band is incredibly poor. They need more fans, or god forbid, they might sign to a major label out of desperation/failing health (See 2.). And then they wouldn't be indie *gasp*...and YOU would be to blame. Don't be that person.
4. GET A LIFE.
and if you replied to that last one with 'music is my life' than you're way too far gone.
